Mountain Lion Ecology

With one of the widest distributions of any terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, the mountain lion has a diverse ecology and life history.

A widely distributed and adaptable cat

Mountain lions occur across a remarkable range of landscapes. Their ability to use different habitats and prey has helped them persist despite widespread persecution during the early twentieth century (Williams 2018).

01 · Variable Names

Many names, one species

Mountain lion, cougar, puma, panther, catamount, painter, ghost cat, screamer, deer tiger, red tiger, mountain devil, sneak cat, king cat, lion, tigre, león, sussuarana, and more are names used throughout this cat’s range. Its scientific name is Puma concolor, often translated as “cat of one color.”

Across the Americas

Pumas historically ranged from the northern edge of British Columbia to the southern tip of Chile. They occupy environments ranging from snow-covered northern landscapes to South American rainforests.

03 · Diet

Generalist predators

Mountain lions are obligate carnivores and flexible hunters. Although deer are important prey where available, lions also consume elk, rabbits, raccoons, porcupines, beavers, squirrels, foxes, bobcats, turkeys, coyotes, and other suitable prey.

Habitat requirements

Their adaptability can make mountain lions appear to have few habitat requirements, but they are wide-ranging predators that need large territories to meet dietary and reproductive needs. Territory size depends on prey availability, landscape conditions, and access to suitable mates.

Males generally occupy larger territories than females, and a male’s range may overlap those of several females. Research in California found that male territories can be approximately 2–2.5 times larger than those of local females (Dougherty 2024).

Mountain lions use stretches and patches of forest to move with cover. As ambush predators, they also depend on edge habitat where forest or shrub cover meets open areas used by prey.

Forest and shrub cover bordering meadows, prairies, and other open areas allows lions to approach prey while concealed.

Forested corridors

Connected forest, riparian areas, and wooded strips allow movement between habitat patches and through human-dominated landscapes.

Life as a solitary predator

Social organization

Unlike African lions, mountain lions are primarily solitary and do not form prides. A group consisting of an adult female and younger cats is generally a mother with her kittens. Females raise their young for roughly two years before the young disperse to establish ranges of their own.

Adult males and females generally interact when a female is in estrus and ready to breed. Mountain lions are territorial, with little overlap among adult males and limited overlap among adult females.

Feeding ecology

Mountain lions are ambush predators. They rely on terrain and vegetation for concealment, approach prey closely, and then use a short sprint and powerful leap. They can take animals several times their own size. Deer are often preferred where available, but their diet varies with location and prey availability (Allen et al. 2014; Sunquist and Sunquist 2002; Villepique et al. 2011).

An adult mountain lion may require approximately one deer-sized kill per week, although caloric needs vary by age, sex, body condition, and whether a female is supporting kittens (Cristescu et al. 2022).

Kill caching

After making a kill, a lion often moves it to a secluded location and covers it with sticks, grass, rocks, pine needles, or other available material. The lion may return to feed for several days. Bears and wolves sometimes displace mountain lions from cached prey, a form of food stealing known as kleptoparasitism (Engebretsen et al. 2021; Kortello et al. 2007).

Reproduction and raising young

Mountain lions can reproduce throughout the year. Females raise kittens without assistance from males, and young lions remain dependent on their mother for an extended period.

Birth and early care Gestation lasts about 90 days. Kittens are born blind, deaf, and weighing roughly one pound. Females may give birth to one to six kittens, although not all survive.
Learning to hunt Kittens begin accompanying their mother as they grow, but successful hunting takes time to learn. Young lions may begin actively developing hunting skills around 15–18 months.
Dispersal Young lions generally leave their mother between two and three years of age. They may travel long distances while searching for unoccupied habitat, prey, and potential mates.

After birth, a mother nurses her kittens exclusively for approximately six weeks before spending longer periods away from the den to hunt. As the kittens grow, they begin following her away from den sites and eventually accompany her on hunting trips. During these excursions, she may leave young kittens concealed nearby so she can hunt more effectively.

Raising kittens is demanding, and females must protect their young from predators and other mountain lions. Infanticide by competing adult males is documented among large cats and can be a significant source of kitten mortality (Logan and Sweanor 2001). When a male kills a female’s kittens, she may return to estrus, allowing that male an opportunity to reproduce (Sweanor et al. 2000).

Because development is slow and juvenile mortality can be high, it may take more than two years for a litter to produce independent subadults. Generally, only one to three kittens survive to the stage when they disperse from their mother’s range.

One expert estimate placed annual mountain lion recruitment at approximately 12 percent, compared with deer recruitment estimates of roughly 25–30 percent (J. A. Dellinger, personal communication, October 18, 2024; Bishop et al. 2009; Forrester and Wittmer 2013; Hurley et al. 2011).
